Jetblack will be tested and attempt the NZ landspeed record on an airport runway. To date a venue has not been confirmed although we have had indication of support from an airport with a runway long enough to achieve our desired speed.
The limiting factors with a tarmac based record are the tyres and the runway length. A tyre that is able to handle the 4 ton weight of the car travelling at over 250mph is quite a feat of engineering in itself. The tyre must then be able to sustain the braking force and the friction from the car slowing down under brakes. At 4 tons and travelling at 250mph the wrong tyre will disintegrate in a matter of seconds. The longer the runway the faster the potential record Jetblack can set. Ideally, Auckland International Airport, at 3600m, would be where the record attempt would be held.
Lake Gairdner is 436 km northwest of Adelaide in the middle of the South Australian desert. Every single piece of equipment and all the supplies needed for the attempt must be taken with us. It’s a long drive back to civilisation if something is forgotten. If Gairdner is unavailable there are other venues in Australia with the room for landspeed record cars. They're just a little harder to get to.
